When should you ask someone out on a dating app?

The short answer

Sooner than most people do. Roughly six to ten exchanges, or within two to three days of matching, is where a plan lands best. Past about a week, the odds of ever meeting fall sharply however well the conversation is going.

Long pleasant chats feel like progress and are usually the opposite: they turn a potential date into a texting habit that eventually goes quiet.

Why waiting hurts

Everyone you match with is holding several other conversations. Attention decays, schedules fill, and the person who suggests something concrete gets the slot. There is no reward for patience here.

There is a second trap in it. The longer you talk, the more each of you has invested in an idea of the other, and the more awkward the eventual mismatch feels. Meeting early keeps it small.

How to ask so it is easy to say yes

Be specific and low cost: a named place, a rough day, an hour. "There's a good coffee place near the station - Thursday or Saturday afternoon?" A choice of two is easier to answer than an open question, and far easier than "we should hang out sometime".

Keep the first meeting short and cheap. Coffee or a drink, an hour, somewhere public. Dinner as a first meeting raises the stakes for both of you and lowers the yes rate.

If they say not yet

Take it at face value once and stay warm. Some people genuinely need a few more days, and a graceful reply to a no does more for you than the original ask did.

If a second, softer attempt also goes nowhere, let it be. Someone who wants to meet you will meet you.
