Ask for a live video call early. Almost every fake account fails at that point, and a real person who is simply shy will usually offer something else concrete instead - a voice note, a photo taken now, meeting in a public place.
The single clearest signal is any request for money, in any form, at any stage. There is no version of that which is genuine, including the ones involving emergencies, customs fees, medical bills, or an investment they want to help you with.

They move you off the app almost immediately, usually to WhatsApp or Telegram, before any real conversation has happened.
The photos are professional, few, and inconsistent - different lighting quality, no ordinary snapshots, nothing casual.
The story escalates fast: intense affection within days, plans for a future, talk of being unable to meet because of work abroad, an oil rig, the military, or a contract overseas.
They will not video call. There is always a reason, and the reason always changes.
A short live video call, unscheduled. Not a recorded clip, not a photo, not a call that keeps failing. A person who is real and interested will do this or explain plainly why not and offer an alternative in the same message.
You can also reverse-image-search their photos. A stolen photo set usually turns up on other profiles or on a stock site.
Stop sending it, and do not send more to recover what you have already sent - that second request is part of the same script and catches people who are already in.
Report the account to the platform and, if you have lost money, to your bank and to the relevant national fraud line. In the US that is the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov; in the UK, Action Fraud.
This happens to careful people constantly, and the shame is the thing that keeps it going. There is nothing embarrassing about having been targeted by someone doing it professionally.
