Every message that is only a question puts the work on them. Two or three of those in a row and it becomes an interview, which nobody continues voluntarily.
Offer something of your own with each question. It gives them a handle and changes the register from screening to talking.
'What do you do for fun?' is answerable but generates nothing. 'You mentioned climbing - indoor or actual rock?' invites a real answer and shows you read the profile.
Threads have a shelf life of about two to three days. The single most effective habit is proposing something small while the conversation still has energy, rather than after it flattens.
