Usually message three to five, and usually because nobody has asked anything answerable. Hinge conversations start on a specific prompt or photo, which gives an easy first exchange - and then the handle runs out and both people are left doing small talk with a stranger.
The fix is not being funnier. It is having a next thing to talk about ready, and moving toward meeting before the thread has to carry the whole relationship.

The opening comment gets a reply. The reply gets a thank-you. Then someone asks 'how's your week going' and the conversation is over, because there is no answer to that which leads anywhere.
Replace it with something with a shape: a small choice, a confession, or a mild disagreement. 'You're clearly a morning person and I'd like to formally object' outperforms any question about someone's week.
If they send one line, send one line. Long replies to short ones read as more invested and change the balance of the conversation in a way that usually ends it.
The reverse is also true. Answering a paragraph with 'haha nice' reads as disinterest even when it is not.
The best time to suggest meeting is while the conversation is still good, not once you have noticed it fading. Somewhere around message eight to fifteen, on the same day if the exchange is lively.
Waiting until it stalls means asking someone out on the evidence of a dying thread, which is a harder yes for them and a worse start for you.
Then it is not the individual conversations. Either the opener pattern is the same every time, or the profile attracts a match that the conversation cannot live up to.
The cheapest test: write down your last five opening messages side by side. If they are interchangeable, that is your answer.
