'Nice photos', 'you seem cool', 'hope your week is going well' are all pleasant and all conversational dead ends: the only possible reply is thanks, and then it is their job to restart it from nothing.
Every message you send should be answerable in one sentence without effort. That single rule fixes most dead threads.
Question, answer, question, answer with nothing of yourself in between reads as a form. Answer your own question briefly before or after asking it - it gives them something to react to and makes the exchange feel mutual rather than administrative.
