Why do I get matches but no messages?

The short answer

Matches mean your photos work. An empty inbox means nothing about your profile invites a reply - or that you are waiting for people who are also waiting.

The profile passed the first test and failed the second, and the second test is about giving someone an opening, not about being more attractive.

Most people are waiting too

The uncomfortable arithmetic: a large share of matches on every app never get a message from either side. Both people match, both wait, and the match ages out of the screen.

So the single highest-return change is not a profile edit. It is messaging first, quickly, on most of them.

Your profile gives nobody a way in

Look at your profile and ask what a stranger could actually ask you about. A set of six good portraits and a bio reading '6'1, coffee, travel, adventures' has no handle on it - everything is a category, and there is no question that does not sound like an interview.

One specific detail fixes this. A named place, a named instrument, an opinion someone could disagree with. Specifics are what people reply to, because replying to them is easy.

The first message problem

'Hey' gets ignored because it puts all the work on the other person. So does 'how's your weekend going'. Both are requests for a stranger to generate a conversation from nothing.

Reference something on their profile and ask one thing about it. That is the whole technique, and it beats every clever opener because it proves you read the profile.

If you message first and still get nothing

Then the problem is back to the profile, and specifically to the gap between photo one and the rest of it. People match on one photo and read the profile when a message arrives.

Check that your set is consistent, that a full-body photo exists, and that the bio is not defensive. Those three account for most of it.
