Frequent ghosting is mostly a volume effect, not a verdict. Dating apps put people in more simultaneous low-stakes conversations than anyone can sustain, and the cheapest way out of an obligation nobody really made is silence.
The part you control is smaller than it feels, but it is real: how quickly a conversation gets to a plan, and whether talking to you costs effort.

Someone matching on three apps can be holding twenty threads at once. Almost all of them will die, and dying quietly is the default because there is no social cost - you are a stranger they will never see.
This is why ghosting feels so much more common than it did when numbers were exchanged in person. Nothing about you changed; the number of parallel conversations did.
Ghosting that happens repeatedly, after several good exchanges, at the same point, is a signal. The usual point is where a plan should have appeared and did not - conversations that stay pleasant and go nowhere get abandoned, because they have become work with no destination.
The other common one is asymmetry: long messages answered briefly, questions never returned. That reads as effort you are spending and they are not, and people leave those quietly.
Ask for a specific plan earlier than feels natural - after roughly six to ten exchanges rather than after a week. It turns fewer conversations into dates on paper and more of them in practice, because it ends the ones that were never going anywhere before they decay.
Match their message length. Ask one question at a time. Both make you cheap to reply to, and cheap-to-reply-to is most of what survives a crowded inbox.
Do not send a follow-up asking what happened. It never restarts the conversation, and it converts a neutral non-event into a bad impression that occasionally gets screenshotted.
One light message a few days later is fine. After that, let it go - the silence was almost never a considered decision about you.
