Why do I get no matches on OkCupid?

The short answer

On OkCupid the usual cause is not your answers, it is that the app stopped showing long profiles to people who never scroll. OkCupid moved years ago from a matching site to a swiping one, and a profile that worked under the old system - detailed, text-heavy, answered honestly - now competes on a photo.

So the fix is the same as on any swipe app: the lead photo has to earn the tap before a word of your writing is read.

What actually changed

The old OkCupid ranked on the match percentage built from answered questions, and a thoughtful profile with a mediocre photo did well. The current app puts a stack of photos in front of you and asks you to swipe.

The questions still exist and still affect who you are shown to, but they no longer rescue a weak photo set. If you built your profile under the old rules it is not broken - it is optimised for a product that no longer exists.

Cause 1: a smaller pool than you think

OkCupid's active user base is well below Tinder's, Hinge's or Bumble's in most cities, and outside large metros it can be very thin. A profile that would get steady matches elsewhere can get near silence here simply because few people are swiping in your radius.

Widen your distance filter before you change anything else. If matches appear at 50 miles and not at 15, the profile was never the problem, and no rewrite would have found that out.

Cause 2: the lead photo is doing old-OkCupid work

Profiles written for the old site often lead with something characterful rather than clear - a photo that makes sense once you have read the bio. On a swipe feed nobody reads first.

Lead with a sharp, well lit photo where your face is unobstructed and you are the only person in frame. Keep the characterful one and move it to position three, where it rewards someone who has already stopped.

Cause 3: answers that filter harder than you meant

OkCupid lets you mark answers as unacceptable, and it is easy to rule out large parts of the pool without noticing - especially on politics, religion and children, where people set a hard filter on a question they only mildly care about.

Review your dealbreakers and keep only the ones you would genuinely end a good date over. Everything else can stay a preference.

What to do this week

Widen the distance filter, replace the lead photo with your clearest one, and cut your dealbreakers to the two you would actually not compromise on. Change one at a time and give each a few days, or you will not know which one moved the number.

If you want a second opinion on the photo set before you start, that is exactly what a free review is for.
