Paying multiplies your current conversion rate. If your profile converts, more reach is worth money. If it does not, you are paying to show a profile that is not working to more people.
So the order matters: fix the lead photo first, then consider paying. Doing it the other way round is the most common way people waste a subscription.

Broadly three things: more reach (boosts, more likes), more information (who liked you), and more filters. Only the second reliably saves time - seeing who already liked you removes the guessing, and for many people that alone is the whole value.
Extra filters are the one to be careful with. They feel like control and they usually shrink your pool further, which is often the original problem.
You get matches but not enough of them, you are in a dense city, and you are actively going on dates. That is the profile of someone whose conversion works and who just needs volume.
Also worth it as a short, deliberate experiment: one month, one app, no other changes, so you can actually attribute the result.
Very few matches to begin with, a lead photo you have never tested, or a set that has not changed in a year. Spend the month on the photos instead - it is free and the effect is larger.
Also not worth it across three apps at once. You will not be able to tell which one did anything.
Count matches per week for two weeks before subscribing. Then subscribe and change nothing else for a month. Compare the same number. If it did not move meaningfully, cancel - and now you know something specific rather than having a feeling.
