It exists because catfishing is the single most common complaint on every dating app, and the badge is the cheapest signal an app can give that the person in the photos is the person typing.
On apps where verification is common, an unverified profile reads as a choice rather than an oversight - and the most obvious explanation for that choice is that the photos are not current or not you.
That is unfair to the many people who simply never got round to it, but it is how it is read, and it costs matches quietly. If your photos are genuinely you, verifying removes a doubt you did not know you were carrying.
